If you're crossing the Channel from Dover and travelling north from Calais once you get to France, why not try Dover-Dunkerque instead of Dover-Calais - Norfolk Lines (now known as DFDS Seaways) operate a ferry service as good as [in my opinion a little friendler and more efficient than] P&O / SeaFrance, to the small port of Dunkerque.
